With the 2022/2023 ice fishing season wrapped up, I want to share the only walleye I caught all year. While my dad caught a few over the season, he’s the jealous one because the only one I caught all year was a monster. This beast is by far the biggest walleye I’ve caught, it measured 76cm and weighed 10lbs on the dot. Sorry about the imperial and metric measurements, we kind of use both here. Prior to this, the largest one I caught was last year and it weighed in at 5lbs so needless to say I destroyed my old personal best. If this mathematical trend continues I should land a 20lb one next year! Or at least a 15lb one depending on which formula you use.

Ice fishing season 2021/2022
In recent years the ice fishing season has been fairly slow for my dad and I regardless of which lake we decided to visit. While the 2021/2022 season this year wasn’t particularly amazing either, it was an uptick from the years before which was a welcome change. With the season over (about a month ago actually, I’m just slow with posting things) I took a look back at some photos we thought would be worthy to take.
This was my biggest prize on the year, she weighed exactly 5.00lbs. Over the years I’ve caught some good size walleye, but I can’t recall a recent catch that was this big. Even when we go far up north in Canada to remote areas they’re mostly a bit smaller than this one. Though I admit we don’t weigh every single one we catch.
This was our best day on the ice, which isn’t too shabby considering we only really fish for 5 or 6 hours at a time, sometimes even less. I can’t take much credit for this haul though, my dad caught everything in this picture except for one of the two larger walleye. In my defense, I also did catch another walleye, but it was tiny so I threw it back. Also I’m not entirely sure how a pike found it’s way to the spot but we’ll take it too.
This walleye gets an honorable mention for being the prettiest fish we caught. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but in the sunlight it was sparkling beautifully. My girlfriend’s daughter said it was a golden fish because of its colour and I can’t disagree.
As much as we do enjoy our father and son ice fishing adventures, we have no problem putting away the rods for the season as it just means we can starting pulling out the golf clubs and hitting the links!
Ice fishing season has begun!
Besides playing the old NES with my dad, another thing we did together when I was younger was fishing. Somewhere in late high school this kind of tapered off as I began to have a bit of a social life and such. During university I was too busy as well and then I moved away and a hectic life just kept me busy. Though granted I could’ve made time during those years, I also just didn’t feel the urge to go fishing. So I didn’t really end up going with him again until I was 30 (we have gone golfing on the weekends for years so it’s not like I just ditched him don’t worry).
That was summertime fishing, I never really went ice fishing with him as I hated the cold. I decided one weekend to join him and give it a whirl. I found it relaxing when there isn’t a nibble while still exciting when they’re biting. So now it’s become a regular thing when we have a day free on the weekend.
I remember catching lots of perch when I was a kid but this weekend I caught the biggest perch I’ve ever seen let alone caught! It fought pretty good too, in fact when I was pulling it up I was convinced it was a decent sized walleye or perhaps a smaller pike. While it wasn’t the best day fishing (as you can tell by what we caught) I was ecstatic to catch this one. It measured 33cm (13 inches):
And while we’re on the topic of personal bests, I got this walleye last year though I never posted it then so here it is. It measured 60cm (24 inches) and I can’t remember the weight even though we did weigh it.
